Utilizing over 100 acres of outdoor space, Green Oak Ranch operates as a Christ-centered recovery program for those battling against alcohol and/or substance abuse. We have seen countless lives headed for destruction, turn around and come to know the love of God and grow in the understanding that your past mistakes, forgiven by Jesus and saved by His Grace, will not determine your future.
The program effectively incorporates a method of social recovery/restoration alongside an effective Ranch community involvement. The Ranch provides recovery and restoration services for men and women. Social restoration comes from meaningful relationships with staff and peers, working together within the community.
Residents who consistently demonstrate appropriate recovery/restoration lifestyle skills are assisted in transitioning to the mainstream community outside of Green Oak Ranch. Transitioning residents work in outside community jobs while continuing to live at the Ranch. Later, as established members of the outside community, Ranch “alumni” are encouraged to mentor those within the Ranch community who are pursuing chemical freedom and personal wholeness.
ABOUT GREEN OAK MINISTRIES
History of Green Oak Ranch
Green Oak Ranch has a rich history in the North County of San Diego. The Ranch was once home to the Kumeyaay and Luiseno Indian tribes, before being relocated to the Pala Indian Reservation in 1903. The Butterfield Overland Stagecoach Line had a rest stop at the Ranch, which is now ‘Green Oak Ranch City Hall’, operating from 1857 to 1861. In the 1930’s Green Oak Ranch was part of the nationwide network of Civilian Conservation Corps instituted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Great Depression. The US Army acquired the facility from the CCC in 1942 and used it during WW II as a battalion patrol base camp called Camp Vista until the beginning of 1945.
In 1950, the Union Rescue Mission purchased the site and established “Green Oak Ranch” as we know it today, a Christian youth camp for inner-city boys and later to include girls in 1968. The Los Angeles Mission also included men as ‘Ranch Hands’, which with the ranch’s rural setting proved highly effective in helping inner-city men break persistent alcohol addiction.
In 1998, local long-time businessman Arie de Jong purchased Green Oak Ranch and helped to establish a one-of-a-kind, collaborative Christian community, helping to serve all the North County, called Green Oak Ranch Ministries, Inc. The Ranch continues to help support itself through its camp and retreat programs.
Our Founders
Carl and Mary Fielstra founded the current model of Green Oak Ranch Ministries over 20 years ago. Carl Fielstra served on the Board of Directors for the Union Rescue Mission in the 1980’s and was subsequently appointed chairman of the Green Oak Ranch Oversight Committee. Carl, recognizing a continuing hope and future for the “Ranch”, and more importantly he believed in hope for a better future for men and women desperately addicted to drugs and alcohol. The Fielstra’s retired from Green Oak Ranch in 2013, and although retired, their commitment to serve the recovery community and its people continues to this day!
