This place is amazing, after 20 years of relapsing, and 12 step based treatment centers (7) I was done. I had no hope. I completed the 12 steps more than once, I followed all the suggestions, helped others and i could not stay sober. More than that every time i was sober I knew something was missing, I just could not pin point it. Practical Recovery opened my eyes ,they helped me uncover deep core beliefs like shame, and thought patterns that had plagued me for years. They empowered me, and taught me to trust my judgement.

For Families

We propose that, instead of attempting to force a loved one to make big changes, family members and/or friends begin by seeking counseling on how to react to the addicted individual. By working with those who care about an afflicted individual, we aim to increase the chances of having their loved ones seek treatment, while offering substance abuse support for families and friends so that they can maintain a caring and supportive relationship with the person. Our focus is on helping those who care find opportunities to reward their loved ones when positive change occurs. We discourage the practice of shielding the person from the consequences of the addiction, and encourage the withdrawal of support when the person engages in addictive behavior. Once treatment has begun, we also coach friends and family on how to enhance the likelihood of maintaining progress.

The strategies used with this approach not only greatly increase the odds that loved ones with addictions will enter treatment; they can improve a supporting family member or friend’s life as well. The changes may take some time to occur, but tend to be lasting.

For Professionals

It is our goal to collaborate with mental health, health care and addiction professionals in a variety of ways. Many times we can work together to provide the best treatment necessary in a collaborative manner. Contact us and discuss the needs of your client to see how we can be of service. Depending on the specific situation, treatment with the referring provider continues simultaneously, resumes upon completion of services at Practical Recovery, or the client transfers completely to Practical Recovery’s care.

Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate

Each of our IOP and IIOP clients clients receives a copy of Dr. Horvath’s groundbreaking workbook, Sex, Drugs, Gambling & Chocolate: A Workbook for Overcoming Addictions (2nd ed., San Luis Obispo: Impact, 2003), which presents a comprehensive and science-based approach on this subject. This workbook teaches readers how to get started on the change process, and increase and maintain motivation by fully understanding the benefits and costs of addictive behavior, coping with craving, experiencing a sense of choice and freedom in recovery, balancing one’s life, coping with recurrences (relapses) and retaining suitable outside support.

SMART Recovery

SMART Recovery is a group approach to recovery that began in 1994. It is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and other 12-step groups in that it is a non-profit organization that supports abstinence and offers free (donation requested) meetings. Such groups are called mutual help, self-help, or support groups. The approach to recovery that SMART Recovery offers, however, is rather different than a 12-step approach. Ideally anyone seeking addiction recovery is informed about the existence of SMART Recovery, along with other non-12-step mutual help groups including Women for Sobriety, LifeRing Secular Recovery, Secular Organizations for Recovery, Moderation Management and the HAMS network. It is important that everyone seeking recovery realizes that choices in recovery approach are available.
